Have A Favorite Holiday?

By Julee Mitchelsin

In many countries around the world the calendar of each year is filled with many holidays. Each holiday represents something special to be remembered or celebrates a tradition from long ago. There are so many wonderful holidays to enjoy each year. Do you have a favorite holiday to celebrate?

Perhaps you, like many people, love Christmas. I can think of countless people who claim Christmas as their favorite holiday without any competition from other special days. It might be the pine tree filled with ornaments and twinkle lights that you enjoy, or maybe it is the presents you will receive that makes you love the holiday. For many, Christmas is a great holiday because it is often a time for gathering with friends and family for a time of reconnecting and enjoying one another.

Thanksgiving is another popular holiday. Similar to Christmas, people love Thanksgiving because it is connected to being surrounded by friends and family. People enjoy a weekend away from the normal routine of life and can focus on enjoying one another and on being intentionally grateful for all the blessings of the past year. People who love this holiday also probably love it because of the great feast that they enjoy. Most people celebrate Thanksgiving with turkey, potatoes, other vegetables, salads, breads and desserts. People stuff themselves with amazing food and they enjoy a nap or hours of fun and games. I can see why Thanksgiving might be a favorite holiday.

For the more romantic at heart perhaps it is Valentine's day that wins the best holiday award. This holiday is definitely one for lovers young and old. It is celebrated by exchanging cards, chocolates, and other gifts. Valentine's can also be a popular time for marriage proposals or even wedding ceremonies to take place. People love to dress up and go out to fancy dinners with their sweetheart. Valentine's day is a great and special holiday when it is shared with someone you really love.

The patriotic among us might choose Independence Day as the best holiday of the year. Every July we celebrate the freedom we cherish as a nation. We often gather with family and friends to remember the roots of our country and the many men and women who have gone before us. This holiday is filled with parties, beaches, barbequeing, and watching fireworks. Some people love the Fourth of July because it sits right in the middle of summer and makes a nice break from work.

Whatever your favorite holiday, whether it is one of these or another one, enjoy it. Celebrate it with the people that mean the most to you. Gather them and throw a party. Take time off from work, make amazing food, and spend hours just talking and playing crazy games. If you do this on every holiday you just might find that you can no longer choose a favorite. You just might find that you begin to love every holiday of the year for the different things it means and brings to our lives.
